Leo Crandall is a songwriter, musician, poet, film maker and artist. He performs on requinto, cello, baritone guitar, mandocello, dutar, pump organ, ukulele and guitar.
He has toured Senegal, sponsored by the US Embassy and performed in Haiti. His songs have aired in the US, throughout Europe, and Australia, where he was nominated for the Bluestar Award. In the US he has charted #14 nationally in the Roots and Blues category. He has performed throughout New York State and the northeast in theaters, festivals, listening rooms and house concerts.
Crandall has composed film scores, dance scores, music for theater and soundscapes for visual arts exhibits. He has been the recipient of a Meet the Composer Grant and garnered many film, dance and theater commissions. His work has been heard internationally in Scotland, Canada, Spain, Italy, South America, etc.
As an artist/filmmaker/composer he has been exhibited at Everson Museum of Art, Alfred University, Pyramid Art Gallery, Spark Gallery, Syracuse University, Lemoyne College, State University of New York, Cazenovia College and a variety of theater and film festivals.
As a performer and songwriter Crandall has released eight, soon to be nine, albums. In addition to his solo work he is also the lead singer and songwriter for the band, the Gonstermachers. He has released The Gonstermachers (2006), The Crushing Gift (2008) and Humble the Drum (2015) with the Gonstermachers.
As a solo artist he has released I, Murderer (2010), Letters from the Sun (2013), Vinyl on Concord (2014), The Art of Swimming (2017), and Unknowable and Stunning Thing (2019). His 2017 album The Art of Swimming won a Syracuse SAMMY Award for best release. He is currently finishing his next release, They’re Cutting Up Betty’s Dress Tonight and Other Hymns.
Most recently his work has appeared in the Wave Audio Visual Show in Venice, London Music Video Festival, Mexico City, FeeltheReel, Denver Underground Film Festival, Cocoa Datei International Festival-Buenos Aires, Mark Morris Student Company in Brooklyn, etc.
